I?m not so sure what else there is to think about in the offseason, hence me spending the balance of my time thinking about what is the hardest sport in the world (and snow). There are a lot of obvious choices that can be left off the list?I?m looking at you, Poker?but what is on the list, and in what order, is less obvious.
The folks over at ESPN were clearly wondering the same thing, as they?ve come up with their own list (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/sportSkills). Please check it out first so that you are ready to continue reading, and so you will not be angry when nothing from here on out makes sense to you.
First off, let me just say how hilarious/awesome it is that wrestling people is a few slots above wrestling cattle. Moving on! My list looks nothing like ESPN?s, thus I am compelled to strongly comment on its content (Empire?s current obsession, Table Tennis, doesn?t even crack the bottom 15. Blasphemy, I say!). Noticeably missing from this list is ANY action sport not named Skateboarding. I?ve tried over 75% of sports on the list, and I can personally say that while getting over the fear factor of taking a punch is indeed difficult, not to mention the required fitness level, Boxing is not my number one. If anything, it is, AT BEST, tied for number one. And I?m still scratching my head as to why it ranks above Hockey, because Hockey players are also Boxers?on skates?on ICE!
To me, the choice for World?s Hardest Sport in The World is not up for debate?it is quite simply Skateboarding. What scientific information do I base this brash statement from, you ask? Simple. First off?IT?S DIFFICULT. Unfathomably, incredibly difficult. Second?create some sort of test, let?s say 50 chances at catching a football, and get regular Joe & Joettes off the street to give it a try. I honestly believe that most everyone could catch at least one pass. So, let?s reciprocate the test for skateboarding by giving our brave subjects 50 chances to ollie on a skateboard. No, forget an ollie?how about just stand and ride it for 100ft. Dogs are not allowed to participate because it?s common knowledge that they are excellent skateboarders. I believe in my heart of hearts that not one person could do it, and that there would be multiple injuries.
Honestly people, I tried to skateboard for years upon years, and my best trick to date is not getting a concussion. Skateboarders willingly throw themselves down concrete stair sets and spend days on end trying to ollie a garbage can?the amount of pain they enjoy putting themselves through is boggling to any normal person.
Skiing and snowboarding are a veritable tie in my world. I was initially leaning toward skiing as the harder of the snow sports because, 1. I am a skier and I think it?s hard, and, B. All the moving parts to be dealt with. On the other hand, a snowboarder is lashed to their board. A wise patroller once told me that skiing is easy to learn, but difficult to master, and snowboarding is the opposite?difficult to learn, easy to master. I whole-heartedly concur.
I certainly believe that it is impossible to create an unbiased list, but I do believe that a better one can be created?especially coming from the originators of the X-Games. So take a minute or two to process all of this and tell us your thoughts. What is the hardest sport on earth? Help us create the mack daddy of lists!
