AP source: Government blocks AT&T-T-Mobile merger (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Justice Department is blocking AT&T's $39 billion deal to buy T-Mobile USA, saying the acquisition of the No. 4 wireless carrier in the country by No. 2 AT&T would reduce competition and raise prices. That's according to a person familiar with the matter.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the agreement wasn't announced yet.

The deal has faced tough opposition from consumer groups and No. 3 carrier Sprint since it was announced in March.

AT&T could challenge the Justice Department's action in court.

A failure of the deal puts T-Mobile in a difficult position. It's struggling to compete with the larger carriers, and owner Deutsche Telekom AG has said it's not willing to invest more in the venture.

Taiwan hospital transplants 5 HIV-infected organs (AP)

TAIPEI, Taiwan ? One of Taiwan's best regarded hospitals mistakenly transplanted HIV-infected organs into five patients after a hospital staffer misheard the donor's test results by telephone, the hospital said.

The five are now being treated with anti-AIDS drugs, an official at National Taiwan University Hospital in Taipei said Monday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because she is not authorized to deal with the media.

The hospital said on its website over the weekend the mistake occurred because a transplant staffer believed he heard the English word "non-reactive" on the donor's standard HIV test, while the word "reactive" was actually given.

The information on the test result was given over the telephone and was not double-checked, as required by standard operating procedures, the hospital statement said.

"We deeply apologize for the mistake," the hospital said.

The Health Department will look into the mistaken transplants and decide on possible penalties for NTUH, department official Shih Chung-liang said. If negligence was found to have caused the blunder, Shih said the hospital may have to suspend its transplant programs for up to a year in addition to unspecified fines.

The donor was a 37-year-old man who fell into a coma on Aug. 24 and his heart, liver, lungs and two kidneys were transplanted to five patients on the same day. The heart transplant was conducted at another hospital, while the four other transplants were conducted at NTUH, according to NTUH.

The donor's mother, who was not identified, told cable news stations that she felt terrible about the transplants and had not been aware of her son's ailment. She said he died after "falling from a high spot," without providing details.

Yao Ke-wu, who heads the health department of Hsinchu city, where the donor resided, decried the NTUH transplants as "appalling negligence."

He said NTUH staffers could have avoided the mistake by asking his department about the donor's medical history in advance, and deplored that such inquiries were not mandatory in Taiwan.

Yao said the five organ receivers will very likely contract HIV, and their anti-AIDS treatment will be further complicated because they also have to take medication to modify rejection of the new organs.

The five recipients are all Taiwanese. NTUH is among about a dozen well-equipped and highly-respected Taiwanese hospitals offering organ transplants.

There are also concerns among the physicians and nurses who conducted the transplants that they too may contract HIV. Medical staffers routinely take protections against bodily fluids during surgeries, but some experts also warned needle and other accidential cuts could still expose them to HIV.

Lee Nan-yao, a physician with the National Chengkung University Hospital, which performed the heart transplant, told the United Daily News that some physicians and nurses who had conducted the transplant "were depressed, and on the verge of panic."

Do Paid Surveys Genuinely Work? | NoelInfoServices.com

NoelInformaionServices.com

I have heard this query asked on several forums, and it is something I wondered about myself when I first took a look at paid survey businesses. Paid Survey is now a big business and is getting bigger every single day. So why would a company pay these dollars to the net surfers? Obvious they may be gaining funds from somewhere.

The Earnings claims you find on many paid survey websites may be one of the big misconceptions behind paid surveys. Also, beware of providers attempting to sell you something. There is absolutely no reason you should pay to take paid surveys. You will discover many web pages to choose from that can attempt to get you to join their paid surveys database for anyplace from $20 to $60.

.In addition to a database of a list of these web pages, you will also get access to a database of websites wherever you are able to sign up and get paid to study emails or shop (Having said that, I am just going to cover paid surveys in this lens). Ideally, should you are a new Pair Survey worker then you should get started with browsing Paid Survey web pages on your own through one of the search engines or register at a free Paid Survey web page directory.

As soon as you have signed up for these websites, they?ll then send you surveys for you personally to complete from time to time (determined by the regions you?ve selected to obtain surveys in), and upon completion of a survey, you?ll be paid a specific amount of money from these web sites.

There are also several hundred other paid surveys you?ll be able to join to make much more cash. Most do not send paid surveys as often since the ones I just named. It depends upon the individual internet websites ? generally they?ll situation payments (by way of cheque or for your PayPal account ? again based on the person internet sites) either each and every fortnightly or month-to-month.

When you are interested to earn extra money then you can make it via Project payday. To know about the false online job sites, you can view Is project payday legit.

Scares vanish quickly in 'Don't Be Afraid'

The moral of "Don?t Be Afraid of the Dark" is that what scares you as a child doesn?t necessarily have the same effect on a grown-up. The very talented fabulist filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has in many of his best films, "Cronos," "The Devil?s Backbone" and "Pan?s Labyrinth," explored the heightened emotions and fantasies of very young people. Who knows but maybe this can be traced back, at least in part, to what he describes as the scariest movie he ever saw on television, "Don?t Be Afraid of the Dark," written by Nigel McKeand and broadcast by ABC in 1973?

  1. Don't miss these Entertainment stories
    1. Kittens and puppies re-enact VMA moments

The network has brought back some of the award ceremony's most talked about moments ? with adorable kittens and puppies as the celebs. Watch them!

    2. Trailer of the Week: Call it 'Scary Potter'
    3. Clicky Clip of the Week winner: Cooper's giggles
    4. Depp to cameo as teacher in '21 Jump Street'
    5. Dummies in movies can make for smart humor

Now he has remade that telefilm into a feature, which he co-wrote and co-produced while handing directing chores to comics artist Troy Nixey (creator of "Trout"), making a feature debut. The result is a scary movie that is genuinely scary in parts, although an adult can?t help noticing this is set in the very worn and tattered territory of the haunted-house genre. Then when you get a glimpse of the CGI critters causing all the mayhem, the scares completely vanish. You spend the rest of the movie wondering why someone doesn?t just call a fumigator and get rid of those damn creatures.

Story: Home, scary home: Creepiest movie houses

The movie may still scare 9-year-olds when it gets released Aug. 26, but anyone much older may laugh rather than shriek. Del Toro is by now a brand name so interest from his extended fan base as well as those from the world of comics should allow Miramax and FilmDistrict to enjoy a modest box-office success before this movie joins its predecessor as a late-night video.

Del Toro showed interest in developing this film before his worldwide success with "Pan?s Labyrinth" so one can look upon "Don?t Be Afraid of the Dark" as something of a trial run for some of the themes and imagery connected to that amazing film. A young girl under severe emotional distress enters an imaginary world hidden from adults that seems to be a refuge only to gradually take on macabre and treacherous aspects.

  1. Quick facts

Starring: Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce, Bailee Madison
    Director: Troy Nixey
Run time: 1 hour, 40 minutes
MPAA rating: R for violence and terror

Every child believes a monster is lurking under the bed or in the dark. Only in the case of young Sally (Bailee Madison) something is there. Paying little heed to her fears ? although after one frightening episode a shrink is called in ? are her distracted father, an ambitious architect Alex Hurst (Guy Pearce), and his interior decorator girlfriend Kim (Katie Holmes).

Story: 'Now I want to play with you': Scary movie lines

Sally has been sent ? ?discarded? might be a better term ? by her mother to live with her father in a Gothic Rhode Island mansion he is restoring to sell and, he hopes, revive his flagging career. Left to her own devices, the lonely girl wanders through the labyrinthine grounds and spooky interiors of Blackwood Manor where she stumbles onto its secrets, despite the best efforts of its wary caretaker (veteran Jack Thompson) to cover these up.

Voices call to her to come down to the basement and play. Things happen to the adults, especially the shredding of Kim?s clothes, that are blamed on her but she knows she didn?t do. So far so good as the movie, written by del Toro with Matthew Robbins, nicely links events, whether real or imagined, with the distraught emotional state of a child.

Story: Aug. 29 chat: Discuss worst movies of all time

Interestingly, the original teleplay has no child. A married couple moves into strange old mansion and it?s the neurotic wife who believes she?s losing her mind as she sees horrible little creatures. By putting a child at the center of the action, del Toro introduces his 9-year-old self, as it were, into the story: This is how he remembers the experience of seeing this movie.

If somehow the forces of evil had remained unseen and perhaps figments or externalizations of the little girl?s fragile emotions, this Dark might have retained its childhood power over all viewers. Alas, when little creatures climb out of a wall grate and scurry across floors and walls, baring fangs, snapping claws and staring with heartless beady eyes, you?ve gone from the world of "Turn of the Screw" to that of "Gremlins."

Video: Holmes at 'Don't Be Afraid' premiere (on this page)

The film also cheats a bit. You never quite understand the rules of the game: Where do the powers of these creatures come from that they?re able to turn electricity on and off or make sharp objects fly through the air?

Shooting entirely on a large set and a few exteriors in Melbourne, Australia, Nixey shows himself much more of a visual artist than a dramatic one at this stage of his film career. What the film does best is to build up an atmosphere, richly detailed and mysterious, where anything evil is possible. It also manages at least for a while to get you into the head of its young protagonist and see the house and its grounds from her point of view. But the adults are very old stock characters, exasperatingly so, and the pay-off is nil. The title then becomes all too prophetic: You don?t need to be afraid of this dark.

Hurricane Irene could be "big threat" to Northeast (Reuters)

NASSAU (Reuters) ? Powerful Hurricane Irene began battering the Bahamas on Wednesday on a track to the North Carolina coast that forecasters say could threaten the densely populated Northeast, including New York, starting Sunday.

Irene, a major Category 3 storm with winds of 120 miles per hour, was pounding southeast Bahamian islands with winds, rain and dangerous storm surge. Tourists fled the storm and major cruise lines canceled Bahamas stops for coming days.

The first hurricane of the storm-filled 2011 Atlantic season is expected to gather power after it leaves the Bahamas on Thursday and race across open warm waters to clip North Carolina's jutting Outer Banks region on Saturday afternoon.

After that, forecasters see it hugging the U.S. eastern seaboard, swirling rains and winds across several hundred miles (km) as it churns northward toward New England. The forecast track indicates Florida and Georgia will be spared.

"The exact center of the storm may actually stay pretty close to the coastline during the day on Saturday and then become a big threat for New England and perhaps Long Island toward 96 to 100 hours out on Sunday," National Hurricane Center Director Bill Read said.

"Be advised, it's going to be a very large circulation as it moves north of the Carolinas," he told a conference call.

Read said North Carolina could experience tropical storm force winds as early as Saturday morning.

DANGEROUSLY WIDE HURRICANE

At 2 p.m. EDT, Irene was located about 250 miles southeast of Nassau, capital of the Bahamas.

If Irene makes a direct landfall in the continental United States, it will be the first hurricane to hit there since Ike pounded Texas in 2008. But forecasts showed it posing no threat to U.S. oil and gas installations in the Gulf of Mexico.

At least one person died when Irene pummeled Puerto Rico this week, felling trees and power lines and causing torrential rains after raking across the Caribbean. President Barack Obama has declared an emergency in the U.S. Caribbean territory.

U.S. states from the Carolinas northward were on alert and evacuations were already under way in Ocracoke, the most exposed of North Carolina's Outer Banks barrier islands.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a statement on Wednesday he had ordered the state's Office of Emergency Management to prepare for possible impact from Irene.

Cuomo said coastal zones were most at risk, although inland areas could get hit by heavy rainfall and strong winds.

Forecasters have warned that even if the center of the hurricane stays offshore as it tracks up the mid-Atlantic coast from the weekend, its wide, swirling bands could lash cities including Washington and New York with winds and rain, knock out power, trigger coastal storm surges and cause flooding.

"We're not paying attention just to the eye of the storm. We're looking at how wide it is, how large it is," Virginia Emergency Management Department spokesperson Laura Southard said, advising residents to prepare.

'STOCKING UP LIKE CRAZY'

Earlier on Wednesday, Irene strengthened over the Bahamas to a major Category 3 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson intensity scale, posing a high risk of injury and death. The NHC said it could become a Category 4 by Thursday.

"Someone's roof is in my front yard," Harvey Roberts, an assistant administrator on the sparsely populated southeast Bahamas island of Mayaguana told reporters on Wednesday, saying "tremendous winds" were lashing homes and buildings there.

Farther north on the scattered low-lying Bahamas, including Nassau, residents were frantically preparing.

"Everyone is either pulling up boats or putting up shutters. We are very well prepared," said Chuck Pinder, a 28-year-old fisherman in the community of Spanish Wells.

NHC chief Read predicted a "really tough time" for the Bahamas as Irene swept through over the next 24-36 hours.

Royal Caribbean and Carnival were among major international cruise lines that rearranged itineraries for more than a dozen ships in the area.

Energy firms planned to shut more than 28 million barrels of oil storage capacity in the Bahamas.

On the U.S. mainland, across the Carolinas coastline and in neighboring Virginia, residents stocked up with food, water and other supplies, including plywood to board up windows.

Sam's Club at Chesapeake Square, a members-only discount warehouse, reported a run on batteries, water and generators. "There are people stocking up like crazy -- we're out of generators," said Tracy Hatfield at the warehouse.

Irene drenched the northeastern Caribbean islands earlier in the week. The first death from the storm was reported on Tuesday in Puerto Rico, where a woman was swept away.

Heavy rains continued to pelt the U.S. Caribbean territory, causing flooding and mudslides. Nearly 300,000 residents were without electricity and 58,000 were without water.

Club Drug Has Potential as a Cancer Treatment (ContributorNetwork)

The popular club drug, ecstasy, is showing promise as a possible cancer treatment. Scientists are looking at derivatives of the drug to treat different blood cancers such as lymphoma, leukemia and myeloma. The derivative being used is modified, as an unmodified version at the dose necessary to kill a tumor would be fatal to a human.

Lead researcher John Gordon of the University of Birmingham says, "This is an exciting next step towards using a modified form of MDMA to help people suffering from blood cancer. While we wouldn't wish to give people false hope, the results of this research hold the potential for improvements in treatment for years to come," reports WebMD.

Ecstasy is chemically similar to methamphetamine, a stimulant. We already use methamphetamines in medicine. Granted, they are different than ecstasy and are, of course, controlled, but they are chemically similar and benefit millions of patients. We most often see this type of drug medically prescribed as a treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and for obesity.

Ecstasy is also being looked at for its potential as a treatment for Parkinson's disease and post-traumatic stress. For Parkinson's disease, "researchers at Duke University, North Carolina, have found that ecstasy may reverse the symptoms of Parkinson's disease in mice. The researchers say the findings indicate that drugs could be made with similar effects to offer useful alternatives to current therapies," reports The Independent.

Of course, as research indicates, the version used for treating blood cancers and other conditions would be a modified version. The ecstasy that has become a popular club drug has lethal potential and can cause a variety of unpleasant and dangerous side effects ranging from nausea, sweating and chills to interfering with body temperature regulation and muscle cramping.

It is a dangerous drug in its street form. It is also a drug that has a potential for a abuse, therefore, scientists are searching for a way to make it therapeutic and effective for medicinal purposes while removing as much of the danger as possible.

Leukemia and Lymphoma Research scientific director Dr. David Grant said, "Many types of lymphoma remain hard to treat and nontoxic drugs which are both effective and have few side effects are desperately needed. Further work is required but this research is a significant step forward in developing a potential new cancer drug," reports The Guardian.

While research is still in the very early stages, it looks promising. Scientists believe that further work with the ecstasy derivatives could eventually lead to patient trials.

Colorado earthquake is largest in four decades

Colorado earthquake: A magnitude 5.3 earthquake shook the state late Monday, with an epicenter about 180 miles south of Denver, Colorado.

Trinidad, Colo.

The largest earthquake to strike Colorado in almost 40 years has shaken hundreds of people near the New Mexico border and caused minor damage to a few homes.

The magnitude 5.3 earthquake was recorded at about 11:46 p.m. MDT Monday about nine miles southwest of Trinidad, Colo., and about 180 miles south of Denver, according to the National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo. The quake followed two smaller ones that hit the area earlier in the day.

The quake is the largest in Colorado since a magnitude 5.7 was recorded in 1973, U.S. Geological Service geophysicist Amy Vaughn said. That one was centered in the northwestern part of the state ? about 50 miles north of Grand Junction, she said.

A few homes have been damaged and there were rockslides on Colorado Highway 12 and Interstate 25, but both highways remained open, a Las Animas County Sheriff's Office dispatcher said Tuesday.

The dispatcher, who would only give her first name as Kristina, said she was working when the biggest earthquake hit near midnight.

"Everything was shaking, but we had no power loss," she said.

She said authorities were still trying to assess the damage.

"I thought maybe a car had hit my house," 70-year-old Trinidad resident Nadine Baca said. "Then I called to my son and he said it was the third (quake) today."

Another USGS geophysicist, Shengzao Chen, said the information center had received calls from more than 70 people in Trinidad and several dozen people in New Mexico who felt the shaking. More than 30 people in Colorado Springs, about 130 miles north of Trinidad, also reported feeling the quake, he said.

A magnitude 4.6 quake was felt in the same area at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, and a magnitude 2.9 quake was recorded just before 8 a.m. Two aftershocks ? one recorded at 3.5 and another at 3.8 ? followed early Tuesday, more than an hour after the 5.3 quake.

The last time the area received such a series of earthquakes was in August and September 2001, when about a dozen smaller-sized temblors were recorded, Chen said.

"The area seems to be active again," he said.

Buying a home in a slow market | Marshfield Real Estate

http://trib.in/qStku5

Anecdotal evidence suggests that we're moving into a summer slowdown. It's not unusual for the home-sale market to slow in July and August, when many real estate agents and buyers are on vacation. The market often picks up again after Labor Day, and October can be a good month for home sales.

Corporate Blogging ? Strategies | Local Small Business Advertising

Sunday, August 21st, 2011 at 7:29 pm ?

Where regular solo bloggers write articles with links pointing to affiliate sites or deep links pointing within their pages throughout their blog, a corporate blog must maintain pure value on a regular basis if the corporation wants to get its point across.

Here are a few corporate blog strategies for a successful, recognizable site that any manager would be proud of:

1. The majority of your content must provide valuable insight, precise perspectives and specific information regarding the corporation. Inside the center of the main objective, a corporate blog should explain to the individuals informative subject matter relating to new ideas and insightful variables.

2. As with any web site, a well written, punctual, grammatically error-less is in order. When the simple words are misspelled or paragraphs in wrong locations, it always reflects on the individual who engineered the blog which eventually falls onto the corporation at whole. Make it east to read. Do not lose your readers by adding too much unnecessary information. Put yourself in the other persons shoes and read it. Does it read as if you would be interested to continue reading it?

3. Have a captivating headline. Titles are very important. Do not choose any random title for each post. Do some research on a thesaurus. Place some more intriguing words that look more professional but remember to keep it simple and NOT overdue this.

4. Regular posts on a regular basis. This is a must if you are blogging and you want good placement in the search engines. As with any blog, content is king! Stay consistent. Do not post in chunks and then not post at all. It is important to stay with an even flow.

5. A corporate blog should be promoted in other ways and not only as a blog. Twitter, Facebook, letterhead and email signatures should be incorporated into your brand. Now, with the blog itself, it needs to be integrated into major popular blogging communities maintaining a strong connection with outside sources and the rest of the planet.

6. The overall design must be inviting, user-friendly and have an attractive, appealing theme. With all the competition out there and money being spent on advertising, a corporate blog has to stand out more than ever as an ?independent vehicle? with the companies personal brand at stake. As with any blogger who wants success in the Internet marketing world, an RSS feed and email subscriber list is important.

Also, create a page entirely for comments or feedback. There is nothing more welcoming than a blog that allows for you to leave feedback and give suggestions.

With all this said and done, a great resource for corporate blogging success is Blog Success.

Business Networking & Support Groups

I recently joined a new local group called the ?Badass Ladies in Business.? Put together by a couple of sassy and smart local biz ladies, namely Angie of Fresh Money Studios and Erin of ZukaBaby, the idea is that a small group of local & like-minded biz ladies will meet once a month or so to share stories from the business trenches, compare notes, brainstorm, inspire, and generally support each other in our respective business journeys.

I?m also part of another local group, aimed more specifically at craft-based business. The New Orleans Craft Mafia is based on the Austin Craft Mafia. (Although there are now many different Craft Mafia groups all over the world.) As a group, we?ve accomplished much more than most of us could do as individuals. We?ve hosted monthly craft markets, holiday parties, sponsored swag bags for a large event here in town? and we?ve made a bit of a name for ourselves along the way! We were even featured as the cover story of our local weekly news magazine, Gambit Weekly:

I?m a big fan of groups like this. As a business owner, especially as a solo-preneur, there is so much to do, so much to learn, and many of us do not have the luxury of a partner or friends who ?get it?. So it?s really helpful to have a supportive network of other business owners who do.

Check your local area to see if there are groups like these that would be a good fit for you, and if there isn?t one, create your own!

NASA Picks 3 Pioneering Technologies for Deep Space Travel (SPACE.com)

This story was updated at 4:15 p.m. EDT.

NASA has picked a deep space atomic clock, a giant solar sail design and a novel laser communications system as the must-have technologies to help future space exploration, agency officials announced today (Aug. 22).

NASA plans to pump a total of $175 million into three demonstration missions ? one for each pioneering technology ? with launches anticipated by 2015 or so. The three were selected as part of NASA's Technology Demonstration Missions program, which seeks to infuse high-impact tech into the agency's future space missions.

"These technology demonstration missions will improve our communications, navigation and in-space propulsion capabilities, enable future missions that could not otherwise be performed and build the technological capability of America's space industry," said NASA chief technologist Bobby Braun in a statement.

After retiring its venerable space shuttle fleet last month, NASA is now transitioning to focus on reaching destinations in deeper space. President Obama, for example, has directed the space agency to get astronauts to an asteroid by 2025 and to Mars by the mid-2030s.

Flying with a solar sail

The solar sail demonstration mission will deploy and operate a sail seven times larger than any other one ever flown in space, researchers said.

That huge sail size makes this mission considerably different than small-sail projects like NASA's NanoSail-D, which was launched last year mostly as a proof of concept, officials said.

"This concept takes it much further than that," James Reuther, director of the Crosscutting Capability Demonstrations division at NASA's Office of the Chief Technologist in Washington, told reporters today. "It actually deploys a sail that's 38 meters by 38 meters [125 by 125 feet], which is big enough to actually enable a mission."

The technology could thus help develop deep space missions that cruise through the cosmos without using any traditional propellant. It could also have other applications, officials said, such as helping set up systems to monitor space weather and clean up orbital debris.

The sail should be ready for flight in three years, officials said. The project will be led by principal investigator Nathan Barnes of L'Garde Inc. in Tustin, Calif.

Atomic clock and in-space communications system, too

The deep space atomic clock project will fly and validate a miniature mercury-ion atomic clock 10 times more accurate than today's systems, officials said. That kind of improvement is a big deal, because precision timing is vital to the navigation and performance of any deep space mission.

This project, which is led by Todd Ely of Caltech and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., should also be ready to go in about three years.

The third funded technology is an optical in-space communication system, which would send information streaking through space encoded in laser beams. The advance could let spacecraft transmit data up to 100 times faster than before.

"It'll be like going from home dial-up Internet service to broadband," NASA deputy chief technologist Mike Gazarik said.

The clock and laser systems should provide synergistic results that together greatly improve spacecraft navigation and communications capabilities, officials said.

Together, the two technologies "should enable the ultimate long-distance call," Reuther said. "Combining these navigation and communication systems will allow spacecraft to communicate more quickly and effectively than ever before."

The laser project, led by David Israel of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., should be ready to fly in four years, officials said. After its flight test, the technology will be qualified for use by near-Earth and deep space missions requiring high bandwidth and a small ground-station reception area.

The three projects were chosen from a pool of 47 proposals. While NASA plans to set aside $175 million to support the demo missions, that budget is contingent on future funding availability, officials said.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) ? Kashif Parvaiz is not only an accused killer, he is also a suspected swindler, according to his friend?s stepmother.

Parvaiz, 26, apparently found out just hours before his wife, 27-year-old Nazish Noorani, was shot in the chest that he was in line to collect about $2 million in a real estate deal.

Parvaiz apparently persuaded Martin?Ragusa, 74, to sign over his minority share of a building on Parsons Boulevard in Hillcrest, which went into contract last week ? a day before the shooting ? for more than $9 million.

EXTRA: Document Purportedly Signed By Ragusa, Parvaiz In 2007

?I think he had to eliminate her before the money came or she would?ve filed for half of it,??Ragusa?s stepmother, Marguerite, told 1010 WINS? Mona Rivera. ?I just found out he was on the deed when we went to sign it.?

1010 WINS? Mona Rivera reports: Shady Real Estate Deal?

Marguerite Ragusa told CBS 2?s John Metaxas ?he killed for the money ? that?s the truth.?? She said she has known Parvaiz? for 12 years ? since the then-teenager befriended her gay and disabled stepson and eventually convinced him to sign over rents from his real estate property.

?He would sleep on the couch with him and put his arms around him to console him,? she said.

Marguerite Ragusa described Parvaiz as ?charming? and ?manipulative? and believed he also had a dark side.

?He said ?I hate my wife.? I said ?Why? How could you hate her? She?s beautiful.? It was an arranged marriage he said,? Ragusa said.

Noorani and Parvaiz were walking with their 3-year-old son in Boonton?last Tuesday night when shots rang out. Noorani was killed and Parvaiz was wounded. Their son was not hurt. The couple also has a 5-year-old son?who was not with them at the time of the shooting.

Police said Parvaiz?originally told?investigators that his family was attacked by three men with guns shouting slurs about ?terrorists.?

Days later, police arrested Parvaiz and 26-year-old Antoinette Stephen from Massachusetts on charges of murder, conspiracy and weapons offenses. Parvaiz also faces child-endangerment charges.

Officials said?they found incriminating text messages between Parvaiz and Stephen leading up to the murder.

?You hang in there. Freedom is just around ur corner,? is a text prosecutors said Parvaiz received from Stephen.

?Well I need to speak to you and explain to you how to approach the situation i?ll be depositing money tomorrow,? Parvaiz allegedly responded.

They finalized the arrangements in a cell phone call on Tuesday ? the day of the attack, according to prosecutors.

Months before she was?killed, family members say Noorani suspected her husband was having an affair with?Stephen, who is?now accused of helping to plot her murder.

Relatives say when Noorani?confronted her husband about his relationship with Stephen, he apparently told her he was just pretending the two were engaged to get a family discount at Best Buy where?Stephen worked.

An arrest affidavit also quoted a text message?from Noorani?to her brother that said ?Someday u will find me dead but its cuz of kashi ? He wants to kill me.?

Parvaiz remains held on $1 million bail. He is expected to be transferred from Morristown Hospital in New Jersey to Morris County jail by Tuesday.

Family members have set up an?educational fund for the couple?s children at www.nazishmemorialfund.org.

World's Oldest Fossils Found On Australian Beach

TFA notes that this work was done by Martin Brasier's team and that Brasier has generally been a strong critic of a lot of the claims about early fossilized life. That may be strong evidence that this claim should be taken seriously. However, there have been times before where scientists have criticized claims coming from other groups even as they've made nearly identical claims. It looks like Brasier et al. have done much more careful chemical work than some of the other early life claims which makes this look promising but this probably won't be completely clear until a bit more work by other groups is done. It is also important to note that it is extremely unlikely that we are finding the very first life. Most likely, life had to be pretty common already in order for it to have a decent chance to leave fossils. This means that one can tentatively guess that life arose at least a few million years before when these fossils were formed.

We keep pushing farther and farther back in time when life arose on Earth. This is important since it helps us figure out just how likely life is to arise in general. The argument goes that if life is easy to start then we should expect to see life arise soon after heavy bombardment of Earth begins. And that's what we do seem to be seeing. This suggests that life may be plentiful. There's a substantial very recent argument against this line of reasoning by David Spiegel and Edwin Turner http://www.physorg.com/news/2011-07-astrophysicists-logic-downplay-probability-extraterrestrial.html [physorg.com]. Spiegel and Turner argued that if it generally takes a lot of time to get intelligent life to develop then intelligent life will have an observer bias since it will only arise on the planets where life started very early. This means that seeing life early on in our history might be something which we should expect even if life arises really rarely.

Seafloor sensors listen to quake zone rumblings

The devastating might of Earth's mysterious movements was put on tragic display this year when the Tohoku earthquake struck off the coast of Japan.

The magnitude 9.0 quake was produced by a sudden lurch along a subduction zone, a place where one tectonic plate dives beneath another in an epic, slow-motion collision.

Unbeknown to many on the other side of the Pacific Ocean, a similar subduction zone lurks along the North American coastline.

The Cascadia subduction zone ? a tectonic border region where the oceanic Juan de Fuca plate is grinding slowly beneath the North American plate ? stretches from Northern California up to Vancouver Island. And although scientists are busily studying the fault, which has produced massive earthquakes in the past, some aspects of Cascadia's character and structure remain largely mysterious.

"We don't really know very much about what's going on," said Andrew Barclay, a research scientist at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.

Seafloor sensing
Barclay and a group of colleagues recently returned from an expedition to install 15 newly developed sensors off the coast of northern Washington state, in the first U.S. attempt to gather data on the portion of the fault trickiest to study ? the part that lies under the ocean.

In late July, researchers spent more than a week aboard a research vessel, hoisting the 1,500-pound instruments overboard and, with the help of very long cables and a sturdy crane, settling each massive sensor on the seafloor.

The first instrument stands about 15 miles offshore. The devices, armed with seismometers and other sensing equipment, are spaced more than a mile apart in a line that marches out to sea. They will serve as silent sentinels, taking a torrent of data on the Earth's movements ? whether minute or massive ? at a rate of 125 samples per second. [Related: 7 Ways the Earth Changes in the Blink of an Eye ]

The instruments, which resemble stooped pyramids, will not give up their secrets until a year from now, when scientists return to wrestle the devices off the seafloor, crack them open and see what data are captured inside.

"We expect to be able to hear magnitude 6.5 earthquakes ? and above ? from around the world, as well as local earthquakes," Barclay told OurAmazingPlanet.

One big incentive for deploying the instruments is that they will provide a way to image the Earth's insides, using the waves of energy sent from faraway earthquakes to make a geological map of the rocks that comprise the Cascadia fault. Knowing the arrangement of rocks, sediment and liquid inside the subduction zone will help scientists better understand how it works.

"It's somewhat analogous to doing a combination CAT scan and ultrasound," said Anne Trehu, a professor at Oregon State University and co-head of the recent expedition.

Yet it is the data on Cascadia's movements ? data scientists can't get without putting a technological ear right against the subduction zone ? that may help solve one of the fault's most enduring mysteries: Is the fault primed for a big earthquake?

Violent history
At first glance, the Cascadia fault appears to be a quiet giant. It has produced only a few earthquakes in recent decades. The largest were California's magnitude 7.2 Petrolia earthquake in 1992, and Washington's magnitude 6.8 Nisqually earthquake in 2001.

Along the plate boundary, on the fault's seaward side, the quakes have fallen in the magnitude 4 range, none of them damaging. "It has been fairly quiet in our memories," Trehu said.

Yet scientists aren't fooled by Cascadia's relative timidity in recent years. The geologic record indicates the subduction zone has made dramatic moves in the past.

In 1700, Cascadia produced a magnitude 9.0 earthquake that in turn produced a monstrous tsunami, one that traveled across the Pacific Ocean and crashed ashore in Japan.

"You can draw analogies with earthquakes in recent years and the tsunamis from them," said Brian Atwater, a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey who has studied the telltale signs left behind by Cascadia's last sudden rupture.

Atwater pointed to the earthquakes and ensuing tsunamis that shook Chile last year and later devastated Japan.

Cascadia has produced megathrust quakes of a similar scale for thousands of years, but "centuries pass between successive ones," Atwater said, "and that's why we don't have one within our 200 years of written history."

Secret earthquakes
Although Cascadia has kept largely silent for 300 years, scientists recently made a surprising discovery: Deep inside the fault, beyond the zone that produces bone-shaking earthquakes people can feel, Cascadia keeps up a near-constant murmur.

"We know now that it is slipping fairly regularly deep down, and it's not slipping shallower, where it's locked," Trehu said.

About a decade ago, researchers discovered that between 22 and 34 miles below the surface of the Earth, Cascadia produces strange, slow-motion earthquakes that creep along the fault at about 4 mph, for two weeks at a time.

In contrast, damaging earthquakes that rupture closer to the surface streak along a fault at a supersonic clip ? about 2 miles per second.

Though they are imperceptible except to the most finely tuned instruments, the slow-motion earthquakes pack a seismic punch, all falling in the magnitude 6 range, in terms of the total amount of energy they release.

They also occur with astonishing regularity.

Known as Episodic Tremor and Slip (ETS) in scientific parlance, the earthquakes amble along the Cascadia fault roughly every 14 months in near-predictable cycles ? and in maddening contrast to their destructive counterparts, which are notoriously difficult to forecast.

Many scientists think the slow quakes deep inside the fault could be building up stress in Cascadia's shallower regions, essentially prepping the fault for a large earthquake. However, the location of the slow earthquakes is important to this theory. "It depends on where it's occurring," Trehu said.

Answering that question will send scientists well on their way toward solving what amounts to a high-stakes seismic algebra problem.

Solve for x
On one side of the equation is the fault's overall movement over time. Scientists have a basic understanding of that figure. "We know what the large-scale motion should be," Trehu said.

To complete the equation, scientists have to hunt down all the sources of that movement. Regular earthquakes are one source, and a source that scientists can measure with some degree of precision ? even the tiniest earthquakes broadcast their activities loudly enough for instruments to hear them.

However, slow-motion earthquakes ? ETS ? are sneaky. Instruments must be close by to pick up on them.

The newly installed ocean seismometers are designed to listen for slow-motion quakes along the seaward, shallower regions of the fault. If they are indeed occurring there, it could be that the fault isn't primed for disaster ? at least not now.

"If the whole fault is slipping slowly, then it's not locked," and thus not storing up energy for a large earthquake, Trehu said.

Barclay said he's looking forward to getting his hands on the data a year from now, hoping they'll indicate whether the slow-motion earthquakes are occurring. "It's exciting for me because it's episodic ? and up to now our idea of subduction zones is that things happen at random," he said.

However, Trehu said, the project has even grander ambitions than sniffing out hard-to-detect quakes and imaging the subduction zone. Ultimately, the goal is to understand how the entire system works ? how and why earthquakes happen at all.

"It's poorly understood what factors control whether the rupture continues to propagate, what factors stop the rupture," she said, "and it's those factors that determine how big the earthquake is."

Scientists from more than six universities and institutions around the country have banded together for the Cascadia project, a years-long undertaking that is funded, in part, by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The researchers will make the data freely available to anyone who wishes to use it.

In the meantime, Trehu and Atwater said, people who live within the reach of the Cascadia subduction zone should be aware of the fault's potential. [Related: 7 Most Dangerous Places on Earth ]

"People should definitely think about the fact that a large earthquake is probable, eventually," Trehu said. "A tsunami that's generated in Cascadia will only take tens of minutes to get to the coast. So if you're at the beach and you feel an earthquake, the best thing to do is get to higher ground as fast as you can."
