Home Security And The Correct Type Of Lock For Your Door Home ...

The first elementary tumbler type door lock was invented in about 2000 BC, was made of wood and probably didn?t deter the more focused burglar, but it represented a start point. There wasn?t much choice for someone having something valuable, but to hide it out of the way, or lock it inside a building or some kind of safe. Sadly, this basic state of affairs hasn?t changed that much ? even though most people don?t have jewels in the house, the total contents in the average home can run into thousands of dollars, without taking into account those unreplaceable items with sentimental value. There?s no escaping the fact ? good quality door lock types are essential in our culture, unless we live in one of those magical places where the doors are never locked! If you have to get locks fitted to new doors, then it?s the perfect time to get precisely the right lock.

In these times its often advisable to be careful when answering a knock at the door, never mind the time of day or night ? remember that the majority of unlawful entries to an individual?s home is by a casual thief. If the home owner is elderly, then this is one of the opportunities they enjoy and will likely take advantage of. A natural response to this threat is to have the door fitted with a chain, but will this be effective? A door chain is one of the most common types of door locks. The usual quality door chain is equipped with quite short screws to fasten the fittings to the wooden door and door jamb. These are easily pulled out by someone determined to use force to break in. By the way, the sturdiest lock ever made is useless if the door it is fixed to isn?t robust enough to keep out a thief.

For objects that need a small level of security, or often left in full view, such as a bicycle attached to a railing, for instance, or a briefcase at work, a kind of combination lock could be sufficient. This kind of lock is considered the least effective, and various measures have been taken to try and improve it?s security. In a basic form, a mechanical type may comprise three or four wheels with numbers marked on their outer rims. When the right numbers are placed in a row, then the lock releases a bolt which can be easily pulled out. The least expensive of these are rather easily opened, because of internal imperfections in the workings. It?s possible to perceive the slight ?click? when the wheel is in the right position, and so on for the remainder of the wheels.

A dying man's race to adopt, and a small miracle | The Associated ...

With everything she had to do that morning, Marshall McClain could not believe his wife was wasting time making the bed.

"What are you doing?" he gasped from the brown recliner where he spent his nights.

Tracey McClain was killing time, waiting for the lawyer's call, waiting to hear whether the adoption was a go and 11-month-old Alyssa would finally be theirs.

Alyssa's mother had long since given her consent, but attorney Dale Dove hadn't been in a particular hurry to locate the biological father. In the case of absentee fathers, he told the McClains, the longer the child can bond with the prospective parents before an adoption notice is filed, the better.

"Time is your friend," Dove had said.

But time had suddenly become the enemy.

An infection raged through the 61-year-old Army veteran's withered, 115-pound frame, and the intravenous antibiotics couldn't keep up. Doctors said he had just a couple of days.

But the man who'd survived 60 combat missions in Vietnam had one more task to complete. He wanted to give his name to the little girl who'd been the light of his life these past six months. More importantly, he wanted Alyssa to have the right to collect his benefits after he died.

During the past few days, Dove and others moved heaven and earth to make the adoption happen. An opening had suddenly occurred in the judge's docket, and Tracey was scrambling to get herself and Alyssa ready and over to Rock Hill, about 40 minutes away.

By the time Tracey returned to the bedroom to say goodbye, the hospice nurse had arrived.

Even with the oxygen tube at his nose, Marshall's breathing was labored. He was unable to speak, but his eyes were open, and Tracey knew he could understand her as she leaned down to kiss him.

"I love you," she said. "I'll be back."

___

Tracey and Marshall McClain's life wasn't perfect ? but it was pretty darned close.

They'd met on the job. He was a long-haul truck driver, and she ? 17 years his junior ? was his dispatcher.

Married on New Year's Day 1994, they started their own trucking company a year later. Over the next 16 years, they'd built their Charlotte, N.C., business from five tractor-trailers to a fleet of 32 owner-operators.

The couple constructed a spacious three-story house on 33 wooded, northwest South Carolina acres that they shared with three racking horses ? Rudy, Hunter and Little Girl ? and a pair of goats named Thelma and Louise.

Each had a grown child from a previous marriage. Marshall's daughter, Amy Lane, lived about three hours away in Summerton; Danielle, Tracey's girl, lived with them. If there was any diaper changing in their future, they figured it would be for their first grandchild, who was on the way.

But all that changed one Sunday morning last fall, when an 18-year-old stranger walked through the doors at Sanctuary Hills Church of God of Prophecy.

The 2-month-old girl in her arms was pale and spitting up. The young mother appeared distraught.

"I'm not sleeping," she said. "She's not sleeping."

One of the women in the nursery offered to take the baby home for a while. The mother agreed without hesitation.

The McClains added mother and baby to their prayer list, but that was the extent of their involvement ? until early January.

The church friend told Tracey that Alyssa had been hospitalized for breathing trouble and dehydration. When Alyssa was ready to be released, the friend asked if the McClains could keep her for the night.

After they got her home, a winter storm hit. By the time the snow had melted off, the McClains were in love.

The mother already had a 3-year-old son. She wasn't ready to be a mother of two.

"Alyssa ... has been passed around to several families that mom did not know much about," a social worker wrote. The mother "has not bonded with Alyssa."

On Jan. 28, social services granted the McClains temporary custody. Less than a week later, the mother signed away her parental rights.

___

About two years ago, during a family vacation, Marshall became violently ill. His skin turned a sickly yellow, and the already painfully lean trucker began dropping weight.

Over time, Marshall underwent numerous surgeries to clear blockages or take biopsies. He would bounce back after each operation, only to relapse later.

The business was doing well enough that Marshall decided to retire. When Alyssa came along, he was able to devote full time to raising her.

He was the one who, when she awoke crying, declared that she'd just have to cry herself back to sleep. Five minutes later, he was up to comfort her.

He would sit in his recliner and bounce Alli on his leg, singing "Ride the Horsey" or "Jesus Loves Me." He worked hard to make sure her first word was "Daddy" ? and it was.

When Marshall first became ill, doctors feared it was pancreatic cancer, but tests came back negative. In late March, that initial suspicion was confirmed.

He had just started radiation and chemotherapy when physicians discovered abscesses in his liver. They ordered intravenous antibiotics.

Danielle and her fiance, Kevin Susigan, moved their wedding up a year to May 14 so Marshall could walk her down the aisle.

The first week in July, Marshall went to Carolinas Medical Center near Charlotte for some tests to see how the abscesses were responding to the treatment. While he was there, one of them ruptured.

When doctors said there was nothing they could do to halt the spreading infection, Marshall decided to spend his last few days at home, with family. Tracey asked him if he was frightened.

"The only thing I'm scared of is leaving you here with all this responsibility," he told her. "But, other than that, I'm ready."

___

Dove, the lawyer, was on vacation at the beach with his wife. They weren't scheduled to come home for several days, but something told them to cut their trip short.

He was in his office Friday, July 8, when Tracey called with the news about Marshall.

"Holy cow," he said. "We need to get this thing DONE."

Dove's staff had located Alyssa's biological father just days earlier. He was at the Moss Justice Center in York, awaiting transfer to prison to begin serving a five-year sentence for drug distribution.

The lawyer had two options.

He could file a notice of adoption proceeding, which would give the father 30 days to respond ? days he knew Marshall McClain did not have. Or he could go to the jail and get the man's consent.

At 8 a.m. the next day, Dove was ushered into a closet-like room with a thick glass partition and a telephone receiver on the wall. On the other side sat a slight young man in an orange jumpsuit.

Dove explained how the McClains had been taking care of Alyssa. He told him of adopting his own daughter 26 years earlier, and what a blessing it had been. Finally, he explained the situation with Marshall McClain, and the need for urgency.

The father ? a baby-faced 19-year-old with blond hair like Alyssa's ? was visibly moved. He was leaning toward signing the consent, but demurred: "I don't know these people."

"Well," Dove said. "I can help with that."

Dove stepped outside and called Tracey McClain. He told her to write a letter introducing herself and Marshall to Alyssa's father, and to get it there as quickly as possible.

By 1 p.m., Dove was slipping the hastily typed page through the slot at the bottom of the window.

Tracey told the man about Marshall's service in Vietnam, and about the successful trucking business they had built together. She wrote of their supportive church family, and of the older sisters and cousins who would love and help care for Alyssa.

Tracey promised to send him reports on his daughter's progress, and to "uphold you in a positive way" to her.

"You would be giving us the greatest gift by allowing us to make Alyssa part of our family," she wrote.

Tracey had also sent several photos.

"They look like good people," the young man behind the glass said.

He told Dove he wanted the weekend to think it over. But he didn't need to wait that long.

Later that day, he sat down with a pen and a piece of yellow legal paper.

He said that he had never known his own father, and was grateful for the McClains' offer to let him be part of Alyssa's life. He wanted her ? and them ? to know that, "Just because I'm locked up doesn't make me a bad person."

"The last thing I ever wanted to do was give my daughter away ... ," he wrote. "But you are the parents now and truely have been since the beginning and I have faith in God whatever decisions you make for her will be the best ones."

___

Dove was gassing up his truck around 9:30 a.m. Monday, July 11, when his assistant called from the jail with news that the father had signed. He immediately called Family Court Judge David Guyton's office and explained Marshall's condition to the judge's assistant, Sandy Neely.

"Is there ANY possibility for the judge to hear the case?" he pleaded.

She put him on hold. After a short time, she came back and asked if they could be there by 1:45.

"Sure," he replied.

He immediately called Tracey McClain. He was still on the phone with her when he got a beep.

It was Guyton's office.

"We JUST had a cancellation," Neely said. "Can you be here by 11?"

Dove looked at his watch. It was nearing 10, and he was still in his jeans. He would have to get home and change into his suit while his staff drafted the paperwork.

"I'll probably be a few minutes late," he warned Neely.

As Dove raced home, it dawned on him that he'd have to make sure Alyssa's court-appointed guardian would be there. And since Marshall would be unable to attend, he wanted the woman who'd done the home study present to attest to the loving atmosphere in the McClain household.

Miraculously, both were available.

Back in Sharon, Tracey McClain hastily pulled on some slacks and a dress shirt. When Danielle came downstairs with Alli still in her pajamas, she told her to go back and change her into a dress.

Dove reached the court building at 11:09. The hearing did not get under way until 11:31.

___

With his close-cropped flattop haircut, chiseled features and ramrod straight posture, Guyton looks every inch the Marine captain he once was ? and Army National Guard lieutenant colonel he still is. But he has a special place in his heart for adoptions.

Taped to the inside rim of his bench is a photo of his 7-year-old daughter, Hannah Grace. Dove represented the Guytons in the adoption.

For the record, Dove noted that Marshall McClain was not present in the courtroom.

"This adoption, though, is something that he wanted," he said. "Is that correct?"

"Yes," Tracey replied as Alyssa let out a yelp. "I believe that's what he's holding on for."

The guardian and other witnesses were quickly called, heard and dismissed. Squirming in a cousin's lap, Alyssa cooed as the small pendulum clock over the judge's left shoulder ticked away the minutes.

Toward the end of the hearing, Dove noticed a serious error in the adoption decree. The couple's name was misspelled "McCalin" throughout.

Breaking with protocol, Guyton allowed Dove to make the corrections by hand.

The hearing ended at 12:05 p.m. Dove wanted to snap a photo of judge and family, but Tracey said she couldn't wait, and hurried to her car.

A couple of miles out of town, she dialed home. Danielle answered.

"Tell your dad we've got her," the mother said. "I'll be there in a few minutes."

Danielle repeated the news to the room. Her sister Amy leaned close to her father's ear and whispered, "She's ours."

McClain's breathing eased. The muscles in his face relaxed.

The clerk's stamp on the final decree reads 12:09 p.m. Marshall McClain's official time of death was 12:17.

Yemeni forces attack main opposition camp (Reuters)

SANAA (Reuters) ? The main opposition protest camp in Yemen's capital Sanaa came under heavy mortar and sniper attacks on Saturday, hours after President Ali Abdullah Saleh returned from a three-month absence, protesters and medical staff said.

One witness said troops loyal to Saleh had carried out the assault and cleared thousands of protesters from the camp, the heart of an uprising calling for his overthrow. The report could not be verified.

"They (the government forces) used armored vehicles and weapons, rifles. It was an intense fight ... My house was shaking like crazy ... There are no protesters there now -- it's just armed people," said the witness, who lives near the camp.

Protesters said at least one person had been killed and an unknown number injured in the assault.

"We have ... one killed in a terrible way by the mortar fire -- we only have half a body," doctor Mohammed al-Qubati said at a mosque converted into a field hospital.

Protesters in the opposition encampment on the 4-km stretch of avenue that they have dubbed "Change Square" said some tents were on fire and that there had also been sniper attacks.

Saleh said on his return to Yemen on Friday that he wanted to see a truce to end days of heavy fighting in the capital, but opponents said they feared more bloodshed and the United States demanded he relinquish power.

"I return to the nation carrying the dove of peace and the olive branch," Saleh was quoted as saying by state television.

Saleh, who went to neighboring Saudi Arabia for medical treatment in June when he suffered severe burns in an assassination attempt, said a ceasefire would enable peace talks to take place.

QUESTIONS OVER FUTURE

His reappearance raised big questions over the future of the fractious Arabian Peninsula state, which has been paralyzed by protests against his 33-year rule since January.

In Washington, White House spokesman Jay Carney said: "We urge President Saleh to initiate a full transfer of power and arrange for presidential elections to be held before the end of then year.

"The Yemeni people have suffered enough and deserve a path toward a better future."

In Sanaa this week, a months-old standoff between loyalist troops and forces backing anti-Saleh protesters erupted into a full-blown battle that killed more than 100 people in five days.

Yemen, one of the region's poorest countries, also faces a worsening insurgency by al Qaeda militants, an uneasy truce with Shi'ite fighters in the north and separatism in the south.

Moments after state television's announcement of Saleh's return, Sanaa's streets erupted with bursts of gunfire and fireworks. Shelling occurred in the capital's Hasaba district.

Opponents saw his return as an attempt to rally for war and said they expected more bloodshed, while his supporters reacted with joy and said he could restore order.

"I'm so excited," said Akram al-Aghbari, a doorman. "He is an honorable and great man. I know he's coming to stop this terrible violence. People here without him only know how to rule with weapons, but with him back, just you watch."

Abdulghani al-Iryani, a political analyst and co-founder of the Democratic Awakening Movement, said violence lay ahead.

"This is an ominous sign. Returning at a time like this probably signals he intends to use violence to resolve this. This is dangerous," said Iryani.

"His people will feel that they are in a stronger position and they will refuse to compromise. Basically this means the political process is dead in the water."

"LOVE RETURNED"

Radio stations played celebratory music and thousands gathered at a pro-Saleh rally waving flags, beating drums and honking horns. A TV newsflash warned people not to fire into the air in celebration in case stray bullets hit bystanders.

In Sanaa's 70 square, a hub for pro-government Yemenis, the imam leading prayers said: "The president returned, the heart beat of Yemen returned, happiness returned, love returned, logic returned."

Many Yemenis thought they had seen the last of Saleh when he flew to Saudi Arabia in June for medical treatment after a bomb explosion at his palace left him with severe burns.

Saleh had been involved in negotiations mediated by Gulf states to leave office, repeatedly promising to step down only to change his position at the last minute.

The United States said on Friday it wanted Saleh to sign the accord promoted by the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Two members of Saleh's General People's Congress party denied opposition statements that his return spelled the end for the Gulf-brokered power transfer plan, which would see him hand interim power to Vice President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

"This initiative remains effective and Hadi will continue the dialogue to create a binding mechanism to implement the Gulf initiative," Yasser al-Yamani told al Jazeera television.

The Gulf initiative envisages Saleh standing down three months after signing it. He agreed three times to earlier drafts of the deal only to back out at the very last minute.

Regional power Saudi Arabia, which shares a porous 1,460 km border with Yemen, has been a key player in Yemen for decades, offering support to Saleh's government to keep al Qaeda at bay and spearheading regional talks on a power transfer.

Some analysts say Saudi Arabia might not have let Saleh return unless a deal is likely.

"I'm sure he talked of his return with (Saudi Arabia's) King Abdullah during their meeting (on Monday night)," said Ghanem Nuseibeh, an analyst and partner at Cornerstone Global consultants in London.

"The Saudis would want that if he goes, then any transition of power is in their interests and doesn't bring about an anti-Saudi government. If there wasn't anything for them they wouldn't have let him go."

Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary General Abdbullatif al-Zayani flew to Sanaa this week to try and resurrect the deal but left after two days with nothing to show for his efforts.

The United States, Saudi Arabia and other powers fear al-Qaeda's Yemen wing could exploit the growing lawlessness in the country. Al Qaeda militants have already seized cities in a Yemeni province just east of a key oil shipping channel in recent months.

Challenging Einstein is usually a losing venture (AP)

GENEVA ? Betting against Einstein and his theory of relativity is a way to go broke.

For more than a century, everyone from physicists to the Nazi Party ? which encouraged the publication of the tract "One Hundred Authors Against Einstein" ? has tried to find cracks in his work. And all have failed.

On Thursday, the world's biggest physics lab unveiled a shocking finding: that one type of subatomic particle was clocked going faster than the speed of light. If true ? a big if, even the scientists there concede ? it could undercut Einstein's theories. Physicist Michio Kaku of City College of New York called it "the biggest challenge to relativity in 100 years."

Antonio Ereditato, who participated in the European experiment as head of the Albert Einstein Center for Fundamental Physics in Bern, knows what is at stake. After his team fielded two hours of technical questions, some a bit sharp, from a skeptical audience Friday, Ereditato had a beer in hand and was asked about the idea that his work was challenging the secular saint of modern physics.

"Yes, that's why I'm concerned," he said with a laugh.

There's a long history of experimental results that at first seem to contradict relativity, only later to be found to fit neatly with the theory Albert Einstein loved for its simplicity and elegance.

"It's dangerous to lay odds against Einstein," said Rob Plunkett, a physicist at the Fermilab near Chicago who has tried similar speed-of-light experiments and will now try to test the new findings.

Even Einstein himself was wrong in 1929 when he called his cosmological constant his "biggest blunder." He introduced the constant in his general relativity theory as a force that keeps the universe from collapsing. In 1998, new findings showed that the universe is accelerating and that in general Einstein's "blunder" wasn't a mistake.

Harvard University science historian Peter Galison said Einstein's relativity theories have been challenged and "pushed on as hard as any theory in the history of physical sciences ever" and they have survived.

The elegance of Einstein's theory and its proven track record are why nearly every one of the more than a dozen physicists contacted by The Associated Press about the new findings has been cautious, skeptical or downright disbelieving.

The research is the result of a collaboration between France's National Institute for Nuclear and Particle Physics Research and Italy's Gran Sasso National Laboratory.

The scientists fired a beam of neutrinos 454 miles (730 kilometers) underground from Geneva to Italy. They found it traveled 60 nanoseconds faster than light. That's 60 billionths of a second, a time no human brain could register.

"You could say it's peanuts, but it's not. It's something that we can measure rather accurately with a small uncertainty," Ereditato told the AP.

On Friday, hundreds of scientists packed an auditorium at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, on the Swiss-French border to hear the details. Physicists on the team said they were as surprised as their skeptics about the results, which appear to violate the laws of nature as we know them.

Going faster than light is something that is just not supposed to happen, according to Einstein's 1905 special theory of relativity. The speed of light ? 186,282 miles per second (299,792 kilometers per second) ? has long been considered the cosmic speed limit.

"If you find some matter particle such as the neutrino going faster than light, this is something which immediately shocks everybody, including us," Ereditato said.

The experiment needs to be independently reviewed ? most likely by teams in the U.S. or Japan.

"If this result holds, and I kind of doubt it, it means we'll have to rewrite all of modern physics," said Kaku, author of the book "Physics of the Future" and host of a Science Channel television show. "Einstein has come out ahead every single time. However, this time you're talking about the largest particle accelerator in the world registering a significant deviation in relativity."

Columbia University physicist Brian Greene said he would "bet just about everything I hold dear that this won't hold up to scrutiny." But even if the results are confirmed, Einstein's theories will need more of a patch than anything else, he said.

Ereditato agreed.

"When Einstein did his relativity, it didn't destroy what Newton did. In fact, Newton explains 99.9 percent of what is happening around us. But still, in some special conditions of matter, you are forced to use special relativity," Ereditato said. "Now suppose we would find one day that under extreme conditions you have to take into account corrections to what we know now. This doesn't mean that Einstein's wrong."

And this is the glory of science, said Don Howard, who lectures on Einstein and heads the Reilly Center for Science, Technology and Values at Notre Dame University. Experiments are allowed, even encouraged, to challenge pillars of science.

"Everything is up for grabs," Howard said. "Even a genius like Einstein."

Kershaw's 20th win strengthens Cy Young bid

Clayton Kershaw

By BETH HARRIS

updated 2:31 p.m. ET Sept. 21, 2011

LOS ANGELES - Clayton Kershaw hears the Cy Young Award talk swirling around him, although he won't indulge it. With his 20th victory and major league-leading 2.27 ERA, the low-key Los Angeles Dodgers ace is letting his numbers do the talking.

Kershaw became the club's first 20-game winner in 21 years with a 2-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night, making him 5-0 against the rival Giants this season.

Four of those victories came against two-time NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum, with Kershaw allowing one earned run in those games. Three of the victories were by scores of 2-1, and the other was a 1-0 decision.

"He's leading in a lot of categories and putting up a 20-win season is huge, especially with the team they've got," Lincecum said. "He's done a magnificent job this year."

The Dodgers' fourth straight victory lifted them a game above .500 for the first time since April 29.

Kershaw (20-5) is vying to win the so-called Triple Crown of pitching. He's tied with Arizona's Ian Kennedy for the NL lead in wins, his ERA is tops in baseball and his 242 strikeouts lead the league.

The last Dodgers pitcher to claim the Triple Crown was Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax from 1963-65, when he won the Cy Young in each of those seasons.

"If this boy doesn't win the Cy Young, something is definitely wrong," said Dodgers slugger Matt Kemp, who, like Kershaw, is having a career year in an otherwise dreary season for the financially troubled franchise.

Kershaw's competition includes Philadelphia teammates Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee, and Kennedy.

Besides dominating the defending World Series champion Giants, Kershaw's stats include a 3-1 record with a 1.42 ERA against NL West-leading Arizona.

The 23-year-old left-hander from Dallas has won a career-high seven straight decisions, and 11 in a row at Chavez Ravine. He limited the Giants to one run on six hits and struck out six in 7 1-3 innings.

"He's one of the best pitchers in the game, there's no doubt about that," said Giants slugger Carlos Beltran, who had two hits and two strikeouts against Kershaw.

"From the left side, to me, he's one of the best, close to Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels. He's having a great season and it's good to watch a young man growing up in the game of baseball the way he's doing."

Kershaw has brushed aside questions about the possibility of winning the Cy Young and after notching his 20th win all he would say was "if I were to receive that, it wouldn't go lightly."

He can solidify his Cy Young bid with a victory in his final start Sunday at San Diego.

"The whole body of work has been tremendous," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "The kid's been doing this every time out for the most part. The performances speak for themselves. You don't need to politic for him."

Kershaw became the first Dodgers pitcher to win 20 games since Ramon Martinez went 20-6 in 1990 when he was 22. Kershaw is the second-youngest 20-game winner in franchise history and the 16th overall.

His repertoire has evolved to include four pitches for strikes, with his curveball being especially effective lately, and he's gobbled up innings, helping the Dodgers' shaky bullpen this season.

"This guy has been the most consistent and you can't look past a guy like that. There's no give with him," Dodgers catcher Rod Barajas said. "He knows how to make adjustments. That's what makes him great."

Kershaw issued just two walks in his latest win over the Giants and left the game to a standing ovation.

"He has great stuff. Plus he throws over 95 and he has confidence in every single pitch," Beltran said. "He throws one slider at 88 and another one 84, along with a changeup and a curveball, so he's a guy who mixes his pitches well and that's why he's been so successful."

Sony's 'Smurfs,' 'Friends' to be UltraViolet-ready

(AP) ? Sony Corp.'s movie studio said Tuesday that "The Smurfs" and "Friends With Benefits" will be the first movies it releases on home video that will be compatible with the UltraViolet view-anywhere system.

The movies will arrive in stores Dec. 2. The high-definition Blu-ray versions will be UltraViolet compatible.

Under the UltraViolet system, home movie purchases are recorded on an online account. Users will then be able to access those movies on other computers, Web-connected TVs, tablet computers and smartphones.

Studios hope the system will encourage purchase of digital copies of movies because it removes the hassle of transferring copies between devices or maintaining a library of discs. They are trying to offset the steady decline of DVD sales.

UltraViolet is backed by major studios including Sony, Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros., Comcast Corp.'s Universal, Viacom Inc.'s Paramount, and News Corp.'s 20th Century Fox.

The Walt Disney Co. has been developing a similar system which it calls KeyChest and is not participating in the UltraViolet system.

Americans freed from prison leave Iran (AP)

TEHRAN, Iran ? Two Americans jailed in Iran as spies left Tehran on Wednesday, closing a high-profile drama with archfoe Washington that brought more than two years of hope then heartbreak for the families as the Islamic Republic's hard-line rulers rejected international calls for their release.

Iran's state news agency IRNA said Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal left Iran just as darkness fell in the capital. An Omani official told The Associated Press the men were flying to the capital, Muscat. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media. He did not say how long the two men will stay in the Gulf state before heading home to America.

The case of Bauer and Fattal, who were convicted by an Iranian court of spying for the United States, has deepened strains in the already fraught relationship between Washington and Tehran. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who was first to mention last week that the Americans' could be released, is in the United States and is scheduled to speak at the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday.

The release came just minutes before President Barack Obama addressed the U.N. General Assembly. There was no direct evidence that Iran timed the American's freedom to overshadow Obama's speech, but Iran has conducted international political stagecraft in the past.

Most famously, Iran waited until just moments after Ronald Reagan's presidential inauguration in January 1981 to free 52 American hostages held for 444 days at the former U.S. Embassy after it was stormed by militants backing Iran's Islamic Revolution. The timing was seen as a way to embarrass ex-President Jimmy Carter for his backing of Iran's former monarch.

Associated Press reporters saw a convoy of vehicles with Swiss and Omani diplomats leaving Evin prison on Wednesday afternoon with Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal inside, heading to Tehran's Mehrabad airport.

Switzerland represents American interests in Iran because the U.S. has no diplomatic relations with Tehran and the prisoners are expected to be flown to Oman now.

The two men, both 29, were driven out of the prison compound just minutes after their Iranian attorney, Masoud Shafiei, said he has completed the paperwork for their release.

"I have finished the job that I had to do as their lawyer," Shafiei said. He obtained signatures of two judges on a bail-for-freedom deal. A $1 million bail ? $500,000 for each one ? was posted.

Police vehicles escorted the convoy of Swiss and Omani vehicles, carrying the two Americans to Mehrabad airport, which was once Tehran's main gateway to the world but is now used for domestic flights. The airport is near the massive Azadi Square, which Iran uses to hold military parades but also was a temporary hub for protesters after Ahmadinejad's disputed re-election in 2009.

Bauer and Fattal were arrested along the Iran-Iraq border in July 2009 and sentenced last month to eight years each in prison. A third American arrested with them, Sarah Shourd, was freed last year on bail.

The London-based rights group Amnesty International called the release of the Americans a "long overdue step."

"Iranian authorities have finally seen sense" and have agreed to release Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, Amnesty International Deputy Director for Middle East and North Africa. "They must now be allowed to leave Iran promptly to be reunited with their families."

The three Americans ? friends from their days at the University of California at Berkeley ? have maintained their innocence and denied the espionage charges against them.

Their families and the U.S. government said they were just hiking in northern Iraq's scenic and relatively peaceful Kurdish region when they may have accidentally strayed over the unmarked border with Iran.

The last direct contact family members had with Bauer and Fattal was in May 2010 when their mothers were permitted a short visit in Tehran.

It was not clear where the two men will be reunited with their families after their release.

Phone messages left for Fattal's mother and brother in Philadelphia were not immediately returned Wednesday.

Since her release last year, Shourd has lived in Oakland, Calif. Bauer, a freelance journalist, grew up in Onamia, Minn., and Fattal, an environmental activist, is from suburban Philadelphia.

Bauer proposed marriage to Shourd while in prison.

After her release last September, Shourd was flown on a private plane to the Omani capital, Muscat.

Last week, Oman again dispatched a plane belonging to the Gulf country's ruler to the Iranian capital to fetch the two men if the freedom-for-bail was reached.

Oman has close ties with both Tehran and Washington and plays a strategic role in the region by sharing control with Iran of the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, which is the route for 40 percent of the world's oil tanker traffic.

Their case of the three Americans closely parallels that of freelance journalist Roxana Saberi, an Iranian-American who convicted of spying before being released in May 2009. Saberi was sentenced to eight years in prison, but an appeals court reduced that to a two-year suspended sentence and let her return to the U.S.

In May 2009, a French academic, Clotilde Reiss, also was freed after her 10-year sentence on espionage-related charges was commuted.

Last year, Iran freed an Iranian-American businessman, Reza Taghavi, who was held for 29 months for alleged links to a bombing in the southern city of Shiraz, which killed 14 people. Taghavi denied any role in the attack.

The possible release of the two Americans would remove one point of tension between Iran and the United States, but suspicions still exist on both sides and no thaw is in sight.

Washington and European allies worry Iran is using its civilian nuclear program as cover to develop atomic weapons and have urged for even stronger sanctions to pressure Tehran. Iran denies any efforts to make nuclear weapons.

Iran, meanwhile, is deeply concerned about the U.S. military on its borders in Iraq and Afghanistan, and sharply denounces U.S. influence in the Middle East.

What Phone is Better For Kids and Teens ? The Apple iPhone Or ...

People these days are rapidly starting to get cell phones at an earlier an earlier age. Particularly Smart Phones. These cell phones go anywhere from the Apple iPhone to the Blackberry. Although, the question is which one is the best for your child or teen?

The Blackberry was originally based as a business phone mostly for adults. With the Blackberry you get easy to retrieve e-mails, texts, and internet access. Plus their hit game Brick Breaker. Along with these features most of their models like the Blackberry Curve have a full accessible keyboard as for their one model the Blackberry Pearl and the Blackberry Pearl Flip come with a half keyboard with around two letters per key.

Although, don?t get this wrong the Blackberry Pearl?s keyboard does have a feature where it tries to predict what you are going to type and works very effectively and mostly helps you type fast with the smaller size phone. The Blackberry also includes a camera with a very nice zoom option. Along with these Blackberry?s there is one touch screen called the Blackberry Storm which is hard to maneuver and does not have a slide out keyboard but a slim touch screen one.

The Apple iPhone was originally structured from the Apple iPod Touch. If you know what the Apple iPod Touch is than you should know that the Apple iPhone is the same thing just basically adding a phone, camera, and 3G AT&T network so you get internet access from anywhere there is AT&T cell phone service. This phone has thousands of applications for you to use and download onto your phone. A lot of these applications are free to download with a few that cost around a dollar or two.

Even you can download the Sims 3 onto your iPhone. Along with these applications you start out with a very fast Safari internet browser, Youtube, and many more. As you can assume this phone seems to attract kids and teens a lot with their games but the Apple iPhone also attracts adults, and business men. The reason for this is because along with the Apple Store?s games they include Google Earth, Microsoft Word, and many more. Ideally the Apple iPhone is a very easy accessible phone. You have everything all together the way you want it. The only downside of there camera is the fact that there isn?t a zoom in option.

Apple had recently come out with a new model called the iPhone 3G S. Which is really the same base except adding a few more features like Voice Control, Video, Search, and a few more. One of the few nicely designed downsides of this spectacular phone is the fact where you must use a touch screen keyboard on the phone but is surprisingly easy to type with. On all places on the Apple iPhone 3G S you can turn the keyboard sideways for a good long touch screen keyboard. As for the Apple iPhone you can only turn the keyboard in a few places. Really though one of the best features is that you can have your phone, computer, and ipod all on the go in one place.

With all things said the Apple iPhone wins for have the all around kids and teens vote for the gaming, music, and internet. Although, the Blackberry does seem to attract more business people mostly due to the fact that its strictly a no game phone with a base of your main needs for business work. Including that the Apple iPhone is more of an all around phone where the Blackberry tries to put its main focus on business.

Just to Pay My Taxes!?!? So, let?s see how today?s news may impact YOUR financial future!

C1?? ?2) Financial Headlines:
For most Americans, Tax Freedom Day means that from January 1st through April 12th, American taxpayers have just NOW earned enough money to PAY this year?s

tax obligations at the federal, state and local levels. However, if the federal government were to collect enough money to pay for ALL its expenses, including deficit

spending, Tax Freedom Day would arrive on May 23rd this year ? adding an additional 41 days that EACH taxpayer would need to work to finance ALL of the

government?s spending budget.

Tax Freedom YEAR has arrived for General Electric, for the second year in a row.? This multi-national corporation reported worldwide profits of $14.2 billion dollars

last year, with $5.1 billion coming from the U.S., yet it did NOT pay any corporate income taxes, and claimed a tax benefit of $3.2 billion dollars!? The company says

of President Obama?s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness, says that GE has complied with U.S. tax laws, and welcomes efforts to revamp the tax code and close

corporate loopholes going forward.

Ok, so what?s really going on here?? Let?s ?check? the facts using our Checks and Balances process.

C1?? ?3) Checks:
Side
Check one:
Tax Freedom Day celebrates the last day that people STOP working for the government and START working for themselves, which means that as of April 12th, the

average American has now earned enough money to pay for their personal annual tax obligations on the local, state and federal levels.? Tax Freedom Day arrived 3 days

LATER than last year, meaning we?re paying slightly MORE taxes in 2011 than in 2010. The slight increase from last year is attributed to incomes increasing and the

resurgence of corporate tax revenue.?? The Tax Foundation says that Americans will pay MORE in taxes in 2011 than they will spend on groceries, clothing and shelter

combined.

Tax Freedom Day was established by a Florida businessman in 1948, and later deeded it to the Tax Foundation, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that has

monitored fiscal policy at the federal, state and local levels since 1937.? The foundation says that Tax Freedom Day answers the basic question, ?at what price is the

nation paying for the government??? To calculate the Tax Freedom Day, the nation?s total tax payments collected is divided by the nations total income.? The LATEST

Tax Freedom Day so far, was May 1st, 2000, and the EARLIEST was January 19th, 1913.

C1?? ?Check two:
Side
General Electric, the nation?s largest corporation and considered the 4th most recognized brand in the world, was able to slip right through a tax loophole last year and

pay zero corporate taxes.? The corporate tax rate in the United States is 35%, one of the highest in the world. Based on GE?s profits, it would have paid nearly $5

billion dollars in taxes to the IRS.? However, the company says that more than $9 billion dollars of its TOTAL profit was earned overseas and, due to federal law, taxes

are only due IF the company brings its overseas profits BACK to the United States.? The other $5.1 billion dollars earned in the U.S. was essentially a wash, once the

substantial losses from 2008 and 2009 were applied.? According to the New York Times, regulatory filings show that, in the last 5 years, G.E. has accumulated $26

billion dollars in American profits, and received a net tax benefit from the IRS of $4.1 billion.
Because of loopholes like this, President Obama has been considering an overhaul of the corporate tax system for more than two years now. He says he wants to

LOWER the tax rate, close loopholes, end many tax subsidies for American businesses, and ?simplify? the tax code to ?treat everyone fairly.?? He created the Council

on Jobs and Competitiveness to work with businesses to fuel job growth and innovation to help get America back on track. And who do you think he chose as

chairman of this important council? Jeffrey Immelt (the CEO of GE)!
Ok, so you may be asking yourself, ?Matt, what does all of this really mean to me??? Now that we?ve ?checked? the facts, let?s ?balance? this news using our Checks

Horse Supplements can help make your equine feel great. Worming is an essential portion of equine care and attention, but many horse owners find it difficult to produce and maintain an effective worming schedule. Horses need to be provided the right kind of wormer, at the best time of the year and at the right dose, to succeed in the cure versus the like of tapeworms, pinworms and many others. Parascaris equorum or large roundworms are the largest internal parasite affecting horses, varying in length from 5? to 15?. Ascarids reach up to 1/2? in diameter when fully developed and look much like a white-colored earthworm.

These parasitic organisms are normal in young horses and are not often found in horses more than five years old. Immunity usually builds up following contact with these large roundworms in the course of adolescence. The female roundworm deposits eggs inside the intestine and the eggs pass out through the manure. The larvae develop to infective stage within the eggs, which are ingested by the equine with contaminated feed or water. The eggs hatch out in the intestinal tract, releasing larvae that permeate the intestinal gut wall. They move through the liver organ, next over the lungs, after which to the alveoli where they?re coughed up to the airway to the pharynx where they are reswallowed.

The roundworms after that develop to adulthood inside the small intestine and the cycle repeats again. The life cycle is done in ten to thirteen weeks. Respiratory problems inside young animals could be started out and intensified due to larval migration of roundworms. Worm impactions of this worm variety may be seen in seriously plagued young horses not in a regular worming system. Bots are the larvae of the bot fly and are vibrant yellow in look. They lay their eggs on the horse?s legs and coat. When the mount licks or bites at his thighs, the bots are consumed.

Bots dig into the tongue and mouth and trigger discomfort and inflammation. Ultimately they work their way towards the stomach causing the same warning signs there. There they stay for 8 to 10 months right up until the larvae is passed in manure. They burrow into the ground and come out as adult bot flies. Worming horses can prevent these creatures before they have a possiblity to emerge. Bot eggs should be removed from your horse as quickly as possible in order to avoid infestation. You can work with a bot blade to remove the eggs. This should be a regular portion of your horse grooming when bot flies are active.

Horse Supplements can help your horse. Avoid scraping the bot eggs away in places where the horse feeds or he could still take in the bots which you remove. Horse wormers are sold as specialized drenches, as bot drenches since bots are actually flies or broad spectrum drenches. These usually offer in a single application the required chemical substances to deal with a significant percentage of the infestation. To manage most effectively with all worm types, therefore, a horse worming programme should be designed.

Horse Joint Supplements specialists have different suggestions and expert thoughts on how you take good care of your beloved equines using the best horse supplements in their day-to-day diet regime.

Kanye West Stuns With Twisted Austin City Limits Set

Headliner Yeezy promises fans 'new times' at close of festival show, alluding to the Throne era.

AUSTIN, TexasKanye West is no stranger to the drama. So, it was fitting that on Friday at Austin City Limits — the final night of his ongoing tour in support of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy — he staged a passion play in three parts, complete with dramatic ballet sequences, a matinee idol-worthy entrance and monologues that dove into the artist's twisted psyche.

In other words, Kanye West closed out the first night of the fest in the soul-stirring way only he can: by commanding the stage almost entirely by himself and letting the dense tracks and shout-along verses do the heavy lifting.

Some rappers need a huge posse onstage to support them, or a 10-piece band and large stage sets. Not Yeezy. Give him some flashing lights, a few dancers and an imposing Greek fresco-type backdrop and he'll do the rest on adrenaline alone.

As the dramatic intro to "H.A.M." swelled over the speakers and some beats kicked in, dancers reminiscent of the "Runaway" video took the stage, diverting attention away from West, who emerged mid-crowd on a crane, soaring 50-plus feet over his fans for "Dark Fantasy." Could he get much higher? It didn't seem like it, but when he made his way to the stage for the insanely hyped triplet of "Power," "Jesus Walks" and "Can't Tell Me Nothing," he commanded the space like a four-star microphone general, working it as the blazing lights turned from blood-red to orange and pink for "Hell of a Life."

Enclosed in two laser pyramids that looked like the phantom zone from "Superman," 'Ye rapped about what he called the "true story" in the song's lyrics, accenting the lines about falling in love with a stripper with primal scream grunts and dragging the microphone stand around as if it were a ball-and-chain one minute, a prehistoric club the next.

The crowd kept whispering about a possible Jay-Z cameo (which didn't happen), and Rick Ross also wasn't able to make it for "Monster," but with the stage bathed in cash-green lights, Kanye held it down just fine alone, backed by a three-piece band that was dressed in Kraftwerk-like white jumpsuits. And, of course, when he got to the line about needing to see some hands at the concert, thousands of pairs went up instantly.

For "Flashing Lights," he turned the stage into an early-80's disco, with, yes, flashing white and blue lights and search-beam lasers that scanned out over the crowd. The set-up already looked like an outtake from an Off the Wall video, so when the band chopped up a sample of Michael Jackson's "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)," there were some knowing nods among fans of a certain age.

Like the stripped-down thunder funk of "Good Life," Kanye was mostly dressed down, rocking ripped jeans and a short white button-down shirt over a white tank. The elegantly funky dancers were back at the top of Act 2 for the piano-thudding intro to "Love Lockdown," melding into a writhing ball of limbs midstage and performing a kind of hip-hop ballet to the song's spare, insistent beat. As the tune melted into just Kanye's anguished, echoing screams, one dancer remained, acting out his pain with exaggerated arm movements.

Rihanna's voice boomed at the beginning of "Run This Town," which 'Ye performed with an extra dose of swagger and fierceness as a sea of Roc diamonds went up in the air for a medley that included songs like "Touch the Sky" and early hits like "All Falls Down." And the ear-piercing shout of "We want prenup!" in the middle of a ground-shaking "Gold Digger" seemed to surprise even Kanye, who couldn't really have been too shocked about the audience's intense familiarity with his lyrics.

The second act ended with the visual feast of "All of the Lights," which layered a multicolored searchlight explosion of visuals to machine beats cranked to 11. But Kanye didn't like how the crowd sang the line that comes after "MJ gone," so he made the band start over and — along with the alien-landing lights, complete with horizon-scanning beams and a strobe-splosion — it was one of the night's high points.

The set ended with "Stronger," which was stripped back to just Euro jeep beats, hissing blasts of smoke from a series of columns all across the stage and "Tron"-like banks of red lasers. As the night drew to a close, 'Ye slipped into his red jacket and matching jeans, standing at his sampler for the opening plinking notes of "Runaway." The dancers were back, this time in black tutus, executing freeze-frame poses they held for long enough that it seemed as if they were moving in super slo-mo, like living sculptures that had crawled out of the ancient backdrop.

"This is the last night of this show," West said. "This is the last night ... there will be new times, but we gotta remember these times before we're ... runaway," he added, alluding to his upcoming tour with the Throne pal Jay. He stretched the song out, adding the line "If you love someone tonight, hold on real tight," during a nearly 10-minute freestyle in which he admitted to being the "#1" d-bag.

After a mellow run through "Lost in the World," Kanye thanked his crew, dancers, managers and choreographer for making his twisted fantasy come true, ending the show with his usual ode to his late mother, Donda West. As he sang "hey mama," over and over, he thanked the crowd for making his dreams come true and promised to keep sharing those dreams with them.
