HAMPTON -- Just days after their home was condemned because of tornado damage, one Hampton family says they're dealing with would-be looters.

Friday's twister damaged or destroyed 300 homes in a four-mile radius.

Peggy Mertz' home sustained so much damage that it has been condemned.

She tells 13News they've seen at least a half a dozen suspicious individuals.? One person allegedly tried to steal sheet metal over the weekend.

"I'm like 'That's not yours.'? And they had contractor's cards thinking if I have a contractor card, it looks like a card I can go in any of these houses and they won't even know," said Mertz.

Mertz says one man had to break tree limbs to get on her porch, and initially refused to leave.
??
"They were starting to get in.? I said 'Sir, you need to get away from my house.'? I said 'You need to get away from my house' and unfortunately I said 'Sir, my husband has a gun and he knows how to use it.'? And he took off," Mertz recalled.

She and her neighbors banded together to watch out for people who might be up to no good.

"This is our property.? This is our neighborhood. We're not going to have people come in and profit from these poor people," she said in defense.

Police say they have not had any actual reports of storm-related thefts.
